And he has set himself the daunting challenge of creating a supporting cast in which evil - or even simply bad will - plays no part. Now what’s the result?Įilis Lacey is just such a heroine in Colm Toibin’s new novel, Brooklyn. Every person our character comes in close contact with does his or her best to be as decent as possible and act in the interests of our heroine. Okay, let’s add another assumption - take evil out of the equation.
